The FIFA Club World Cup 2025, in its revamped format, has delivered a captivating group stage filled with surprises and compelling narratives as it advances towards the Round of 16. This edition boasts an expanded field of teams, a redesigned trophy, multiple host cities, and the innovative "referee cam," mirroring the grandeur of the quadrennial World Cup.
Organizers have hailed the tournament as "a celebration of hope, excellence, and pride," uniting clubs, players, and fans through their shared love for the sport. The inclusion of debutant teams and the extended month-long duration have significantly elevated the competition's profile.
Featuring representatives from all six confederations—12 from Europe, 6 from South America, 4 each from Africa, Asia, and North/Central America and the Caribbean, 1 from Oceania, and the host nation—the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup promises fierce competition.
With the group stage concluded and the final 16 teams determined, this year's tournament has already witnessed its share of upsets, underdog victories, and intense clashes, both on and off the field.
Auckland City, ranked 4,971st by Opta Power Rankings, entered the Club World Cup as the lowest-ranked team. Placed in a challenging group with Bayern Munich, Benfica, and Boca Juniors, their prospects seemed bleak. The team primarily consists of amateurs who compete in New Zealand's Northern League.
Following a 0-10 defeat to Bayern Munich—the tournament's most lopsided result—and a 0-6 loss to Benfica, Auckland City faced Argentinian powerhouse Boca Juniors in their final match. Despite the overwhelming odds, the amateurs secured a 1-1 draw, denying Boca Juniors a crucial spot in the Round of 16. This result, bridging a 4,819-point ranking gap, marked a historic achievement for the underdog team.
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami defied expectations in a group featuring Porto, Al Ahly, and Palmeiras. Led by Lionel Messi, and supported by Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, Inter Miami secured a place in the Round of 16, finishing second in Group A.
Despite securing only one victory, it proved sufficient for qualification. After a draw against Al Ahly, Inter Miami faced Porto, where Messi's brilliance secured a 2-1 win. A subsequent 2-2 draw against Palmeiras sealed their progression to the next stage.
The final matchday of Group E saw tensions flare between River Plate and Inter Milan, with Marcos Acuna and Denzel Dumfries nearly engaging in a physical altercation. The rivalry, stemming from the 2022 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and the Netherlands, added further fuel to the heated encounter.
Extreme temperatures also impacted the tournament, with teams resorting to ice baths and cold towels to mitigate the effects of the heat. Borussia Dortmund took the unusual step of having substitutes watch their game against Mamelodi Sundowns from the locker room to shield them from the scorching conditions. Thunderstorms caused delays in several matches.
Furthermore, the presence of ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) marked a first for the tournament, requiring non-citizens to provide proof of legal status to attend games.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, less than a year away, the Club World Cup has highlighted several areas of concern. Issues ranging from pitch quality to extreme weather conditions have raised questions about the readiness for the upcoming global event.
Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham criticized the pitch conditions, stating, "The pitches aren’t great here. The pitches aren’t great at all."
Despite the surprises and underdog stories, the Club World Cup remains a platform for Europe's elite clubs. Teams like Real Madrid and Manchester City are still considered strong contenders for the title. However, teams like Seattle Sounders, Urawa Reds, Ulsan, Wydad AC and Pachuca were eliminated early without a single point.
