In a public plea, Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian has urged Vladimir Kramnik, a former World Champion, to reconcile amidst a defamation lawsuit. Aronian's letter, shared on social media, expresses deep respect for Kramnik, acknowledging his significant influence. This follows Kramnik's lawsuit against Chessdom, GM David Navara, and others, stemming from disputes over alleged online cheating.

Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian has penned a deeply personal open letter to Vladimir Kramnik, urging his longtime friend and former World Champion to seek reconciliation. This appeal comes in the wake of a defamation lawsuit filed by Kramnik that has created significant turbulence within the chess community.

Aronian's letter, shared publicly on social media, begins with a tone of respect and concern. "Dear Vladimir Kramnik, forgive me for addressing you publicly," he wrote, signaling the gravity of the situation and the personal connection between the two grandmasters.

The catalyst for this plea is Kramnik's recent civil defamation case filed in Geneva. The suit targets Chess.com, the news site Chessdom, and Czech GM David Navara, whom Kramnik accuses of defamation related to public disputes over alleged cheating in online chess.

Aronian’s letter functions as both a personal tribute to Kramnik's profound influence on his career and a public call for de-escalation. He considers Kramnik one of his "chess parents," acknowledging the immense impact the former World Champion had on his chess development.

He fondly recalls Kramnik's renowned resilience, citing his landmark victories over Garry Kasparov and Peter Leko, as well as his fortitude during the controversial "Toiletgate" match against Veselin Topalov. Aronian emphasizes Kramnik's strength and spirit in the face of adversity.

However, Aronian doesn't avoid addressing what he perceives as a concerning shift in Kramnik's behavior. “You are fighting your own demons,” he stated, recognizing the emotional strain Kramnik is under due to his campaign against what he believes to be rampant cheating in online chess.

The letter is set against a backdrop of increasing tension. Earlier this year, Kramnik's implications of cheating against Navara led the Czech grandmaster to publish a letter detailing the severe impact of the accusations on his mental well-being.

Kramnik responded by demanding either legal action or silence, which ultimately resulted in the now controversial lawsuit. This action has been met with considerable criticism from many members of the chess world.

Fellow grandmasters, including Pavel Eljanov, have voiced their support for Navara, with Eljanov stating, "David is one of the most honest people in chess," a sentiment widely shared within the community.

Aronian concludes his appeal with a call for unity, urging, “We are a family... let us start from a fresh page.” In a chess world currently marked by division, his message is clear: despite the black and white squares of the board, the individuals involved are complex, and reconciliation remains a viable path forward.
